An assessment of your unique situation and needs is necessary to develop treatment recommendations specific to you. An initial assessment typically lasts for hour and a half to two hours. At the conclusion of the initial visit, you should expect to have initial recommendations for treatment options to address the problems that brought you to see a psychiatrist. The initial impression and recommendations are refined at each subsequent visit. Some questions that you may want to ask at the conclusion of the initial visit are:
- What are my treatment options?
- What are the potential benefits and harms of those options?
- How can you help me achieve my goals?
- What can I do to achieve the goals that are most important to me?
